Arusha Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda has commanded Karatu District Commissioner Dadi Kolimba to launch an around-the-clock operation to drain water and build drainage systems in Mangafi, aiming to swiftly restore normalcy to 502 homes submerged for over a month.

During his visit on Friday, May 24, 2024, Makonda highlighted the plight of the Mangafi residents. The area has been severely affected by flooding since April 8, leaving 889 households with more than 2,800 residents in distress. The infrastructure damage includes the submersion of two water wells, depriving 7,638 people of access to clean water.

Makonda instructed Kolimba to ensure that the work is conducted continuously, day and night, to expedite the return of the displaced residents. He emphasized that the homes near the Karatu Dam, which have been most affected, should not be reoccupied due to the ongoing risk.

“I have toured the area and sympathize deeply with the residents. I will coordinate with local officials to provide relief supplies, including mattresses and food, to support the affected families,” Makonda said.

Karatu Councilor, Joseph Lolo, reported that the flooding, caused by heavy rains, has resulted in 31 homes collapsing and significant damage to infrastructure, including the burial of water wells and the destruction of three transformers, leaving many without electricity.

District Commissioner Kolimba has confirmed that operations to address the flooding in Mangafi will begin immediately, following Makonda's directives. "We have already held assessment meetings and mobilized equipment to the area," Kolimba stated.

Meanwhile, John Daffi, one of the affected residents, has urged the government to expedite the water removal process, emphasizing the dire situation faced by many families.

The Regional Commissioner’s proactive approach has sparked mixed reactions, with some criticizing him for tarnishing the image of civil servants, while others commend his dedication to serving citizens. Makonda's commitment to eradicating corruption and inefficiency remains steadfast, despite the challenges faced.

Since March 2024, Tanzania has grappled with severe flooding, resulting in widespread devastation across various regions. Landslides in Mbeya, Rufiji, and Kagera have left many without farms, while Mbulu District and Dar es Salaam have witnessed extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. The disaster has highlighted shortcomings in disaster management, prompting urgent calls for improved preparedness and response strategies.

The ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proactive measures and efficient governance in mitigating the impact of natural disasters and safeguarding communities against future crises.
