The government, through the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), has planned to expand roads leading in and out of Dodoma city, covering a total of 220 kilometers, by constructing four-lane and six-lane highways. The goal is to reduce traffic congestion and improve transportation services in the capital.

This was stated in Dodoma by TANROADS’ Director of Planning and Infrastructure, Engineer Ephatar Mlavi, during a press briefing on the achievements of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration over the past four years. The event took place on February 17, 2025, at the MAELEZO press hall.

Engineer Mlavi listed the roads to be expanded:

  • Dodoma - Morogoro (70 km),
  • Dodoma - Arusha (50 km)
  • Dodoma - Singida (50 km)
  • Dodoma - Iringa (50 km)

"The aim is to ensure that these roads integrate seamlessly with the Dodoma Outer Ring Road, transforming Dodoma into a model city with minimal congestion and a thriving economy," said Engineer Mlavi.

He explained that the expansion will be funded by the government in collaboration with the World Bank, starting with key entry and exit routes:

  • Dodoma to Chamwino (32 km)
  • Dodoma to Iringa via Mkonze (4.5 km)
  • Dodoma to Arusha via Zamahero (8.5 km)

By February 2025, the first phase of the Dodoma Outer Ring Road (112.3 km) has reached significant completion:

  • Nala – Veyula – Mtumba – Ihumwa Dry Port (52.3 km) is 91% complete.
  • Ihumwa Dry Port – Matumbulu – Nala (62 km) is 85% complete.

Engineer Mlavi also stated that similar projects to ease congestion are being implemented in Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Arusha, and Mwanza.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Sports, and the Government Spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa, praised TANROADS engineers for their dedication to infrastructure development.

Between 2021 and February 2025, the Sixth Phase Government has made great strides in infrastructure development, with:

  • 15,625.55 km of roads in various stages of construction.
  • Nine major bridges completed at a cost of TZS 381.301 billion.
  • Ten more bridges in different stages of implementation.
