The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals has praised Barrick and Twiga Mines for continuing to adhere to internationally recognized standards of mining, which enhance environmental conservation, workplace safety, and the broader welfare of employees and the surrounding communities.
Speaking during the second day of the committee's visit over the weekend to Barrick Twiga mines of Bulyanhulu and Buzwagi, which are in the final stages of installation to become special zones, the Vice Chairman of the committee, Kilumbe Ng'enda, stated that Barrick mines, in partnership with the government through Twiga Company, are at the forefront in helping Tanzanians through the Local Content policy and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
"This is the second time we are visiting Barrick Twiga Mine to see the progress of mining activities and the expansion of operations, particularly research, processing, and other daily activities that have positive impacts on the surrounding communities," he emphasized.
He further stressed that Barrick-Twiga Mine places great emphasis on all essential sectors needed for human development, such as education, drilling of water wells, health centers, and various programs aimed at supporting the communities surrounding the mine.
"We have been informed by the General Manager of the Bulyanhulu Mine that the mine’s lifespan is projected to be another 25 years. Therefore, the Parliament, Government, and the mine itself must continue to work closely together to ensure that the benefits of the mine's presence are shared with ordinary citizens and the country as a whole throughout this period," he stated.
On his part, Deputy Minister for Minerals, Dr. Steven Kiruswa, urged other mining companies in the country to emulate Barrick-Twiga's approach in executing their daily responsibilities in the mining sector.
He stated that the government, through the Ministry of Minerals, has seen significant success in implementing the Local Content and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies, which aim to lift ordinary Tanzanians out of poverty.
He further explained that the government’s goal in introducing these two policies is to promote inclusion and foster social relationships between the mines and local communities, as well as ensure that Tanzanians actively participate in the mineral investment business in the country.
The Deputy Minister further explained that adhering to and effectively implementing the Local Content and Corporate Social Responsibility principles, while opening doors for Tanzanians to participate in the mining business, are achievements that contribute to the prosperity of the community.
On his part, the General Manager of Barrick-Twiga Bulyanhulu Mine, Victor Lule, expressed the company’s gratitude to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals for their official visit to the mine, which allows them to understand the mine's activities and daily operations, including research, processing, and other internal procedures.
He stated that the mine fully implements the principles of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Local Content regulations, as it is primarily focused on empowering and building the capacity of Tanzanians.
“We continue to train and build the capacity of our employees on the use of modern mining machinery, technology, and technical skills to ensure that we have human resources with sufficient technological knowledge. While we have a few experts from abroad, it is crucial that their expertise remains here at home,” he emphasized.
"So far, we have 11% women in various positions here at Bulyanhulu. We are implementing what we preach when it comes to encouraging women in the mining sector in the country," he explained.
He emphasized that the mining company will continue to educate local entrepreneurs and suppliers on how to do business with mining companies, how to register their businesses, and participate in training workshops, seminars, and meetings to build lasting and mutually beneficial relationships for the entire country.
Mr. Lule explained that the mining company has 96% of its employees who are Tanzanians, some of whom are in management positions, clearly demonstrating that Barrick-Twiga is promoting the concept of Local Content.
