The National Council of Non-Governmental Organizations (NaCoNGO) has praised the Sixth Phase Government, under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, for establishing a strong foundation for engaging with and recognizing the role of NGOs in national development.
These commendations were made today, February 21, 2025, in Dar es Salaam during NaCoNGO’s quarterly statutory meeting, where the council’s Chairman, Jasper Makala, highlighted the government’s efforts to create an enabling environment for NGOs to operate effectively.
"We sincerely commend President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for elevating the international recognition of the NGO sector and fostering investment diplomacy that has positioned Tanzania as a key beneficiary of global grants. Many international discussions are now being hosted in Tanzania," said Makala.
He further noted that the government has introduced the Annual Non-Governmental Organizations Forum (ANGOF), a significant platform that brings together stakeholders from the NGO sector each year to discuss sustainability strategies and address sectoral challenges.
Additionally, Makala expressed gratitude to President Samia for appointing Hajjat Mwantumu Mahiza as the Chairperson of the NGO Coordination Board, describing her as a dedicated leader who effectively advocates for the sector’s interests before various government authorities.
Over the past month, NaCoNGO has conducted visits to nine regions in Mainland Tanzania—Morogoro, Mwanza, Kilimanjaro, Mara, Geita, Kagera, Kigoma, Mbeya, and Dar es Salaam—to facilitate discussions between NGOs and regional authorities on cooperation and challenges facing the sector.
However, Makala acknowledged that the NGO sector still faces several challenges. In response, NaCoNGO has prepared a detailed report outlining these issues, which will be presented to the NGO Coordination Board Chairperson, Hajjat Mwantumu Mahiza, for submission to President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.
