The new Board of the Shinyanga Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (SHUWASA) has conducted a visit to inspect the progress of the sludge treatment plant project, which aims to improve sanitation services for the residents of Shinyanga. The Board commended the significant progress made in expanding the modern plant, which has now reached 98% completion.

The visit took place today, February 13, 2025, as the SHUWASA Board inspected the project located in Kizumbi Ward, within the Shinyanga Municipality.

Speaking during the visit, the Chairperson of the Board, Ms. Mwamvua Jilumbi, praised SHUWASA for expanding the project area to prevent disruptions in sludge treatment operations, which were previously limited due to space constraints. She also applauded the contractor for the excellent progress made in implementing the project expansion.

"As the Board of SHUWASA, we are pleased with the implementation of this project. We can see the value of the funds being used, and we commend SHUWASA's management for deciding to expand this sludge treatment facility. We are optimistic that this project will continue to operate efficiently. Once it is fully completed, I urge careful revenue collection, as proper revenue management will enable the authority to undertake more developmental projects for greater benefits," said Ms. Mwamvua.

Earlier, while providing a project update, the project improvement supervisor from SHUWASA, Engineer Wilfred Julias, stated that the project's implementation had reached 98% completion. He emphasized that the goal of the project is to enhance the plant’s capacity to meet demand.

"The plant previously had the capacity to treat 40 cubic meters of sludge per day, but after the expansion is completed, it will be able to handle up to 100 cubic meters per day," said Engineer Wilfred.

SHUWASA’s Managing Director, Engineer Yusuph Katopola, stated that the expansion of the plant will increase revenue collection while also meeting the demand for sludge collection from households. The ultimate goal is to maintain Shinyanga Municipality’s cleanliness and uphold its reputation as the leading cleanest municipality in the country
