The Regional Commissioner of Manyara, Hon. Queen Sendiga, has urged the Cooperative Development Commission to provide training for Cooperative Society Leaders, just as Cooperative Officers receive training.
She stated that when trained Cooperative Officers return to the cooperative societies they oversee, they will be motivated to correct previous mismanagement. However, they may face challenges due to a lack of cooperation from the leaders of these societies, as the leaders have not received the same training.
She made these remarks today, February 18, 2025, while opening a Cooperative Management Training program for Cooperative Officers from the Northern Zone in Babati, Manyara. The training, which will run until February 28, 2025, includes 116 Cooperative Officers.
“There has been a tendency for cooperative leaders to act as if the societies are their personal property, forgetting that these societies belong to the members. Leaders must work toward the goals of the society, not for personal interests,” said Sendiga.
She emphasized that for cooperative societies to progress, ethical conduct and financial discipline among leaders and Cooperative Officers are essential. Without these two factors, no cooperative society can achieve success in any way.
She also highlighted the importance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), stating that the government's focus is on digital integration in all sectors. Therefore, it is essential for Cooperative Officers to utilize the MUVU system in their operations, as this will streamline processes and improve access to information.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture responsible for Cooperatives and Irrigation, Dr. Stephen Nindi, stated that the government expects this training to enhance the competence of Cooperative Officers. This will enable them to perform their duties with efficiency and professionalism, leading to increased effectiveness in cooperative societies and a significant reduction in financial audit irregularities.
On his part, the Registrar and Executive Director of the Cooperative Development Commission, Dr. Benson Ndiege, emphasized that Cooperative Officers receiving this training must apply the knowledge gained when they return to their respective workstations.
