Pope Francis Admitted to Hospital for Health Checkup and Ongoing Bronchitis Treatment

Pope Francis was taken to the hospital on Friday morning, Italian time, for medical examinations and continued treatment for bronchitis, the Vatican has announced.

"This morning, after his morning prayers, Pope Francis was admitted to Policlinico Agostino Gemelli Hospital for a thorough medical checkup and ongoing treatment for his bronchitis, which is still being monitored in a hospital setting," the statement read.

The 88-year-old Pope, who has led the Catholic Church since 2013, has faced several health challenges, including flu and other ailments, particularly over the past two years.

Earlier this month, Pope Francis told pilgrims during his weekly audience that he was suffering from severe flu, which the Vatican later clarified as bronchitis.
