The Prime Minister of Tanzania, Kassim Majaliwa, has conducted a brief inspection visit to assess the expansion of the airport located in Ibadakuli, Shinyanga Municipality. He expressed his satisfaction with the quality of the construction work and directed the contractor from CHICO Company to install lighting so that the airport can also operate at night.

Prime Minister of Tanzania, Kassim Majaliwa, made these remarks today, February 16, 2025, at Ibadakuli Airport in Shinyanga, upon his arrival to board a flight to Simiyu region. Yesterday, he also landed at the same airport and commended the progress of its construction.

He stated that the government will continue implementing numerous strategic projects. Regarding the expansion of Ibadakuli Airport, he expressed no doubts about the quality of the construction, as the contractor, CHICO, has successfully executed many government projects with high standards.

This Ibadakuli Airport here in Shinyanga is largely complete, and most of the key infrastructure is in place. I have landed and taken off from here myself. However, there is still a lack of lighting, so I direct the contractor, CHICO, to install lights immediately so that planes can land at night, not just during the day. This will allow residents, including those from neighboring regions, to benefit from the services,” said Prime Minister Majaliwa.

He further emphasized that ATCL and government aircraft are only waiting for a schedule to begin using the airport. “TANROADS and the expansion project supervisors should ensure that the contractor installs the lights without delay so that the airport can officially begin operations. In the meantime, use the old passenger terminal while waiting for the new one to be completed,” he added.

“The government is committed to enhancing the transport sector, including aviation. Airports are being built in nearly all regions, except for the newly established ones. I also urge young workers involved in this airport’s construction to work professionally and gain experience. Once this project is completed, they should establish their own construction companies and seize opportunities in the industry. With the skills they acquire here, we want future strategic projects to be undertaken by our own people,” said Prime Minister Majaliwa.

Shinyanga Regional Commissioner, Anamringi Macha, commended President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for her leadership over the past four years, stating that she has significantly contributed to the development of the region by implementing various projects. He also requested the Prime Minister to conduct an official working visit to Shinyanga, a request that was accepted, with the Prime Minister promising to schedule a visit.

Shinyanga Urban MP Patrobas Katambi, who also serves as Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Labor, Youth, Employment, and People with Disabilities, praised President Samia for improving the lives of Shinyanga residents. He noted that the Ibadakuli Airport had been a long-standing demand, and now, with its initial operations beginning, the community’s needs are being addressed.

Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) Shinyanga Regional Manager, Engineer Samweli Mwambungu, provided an update on the airport's construction progress. He stated that the runway has been completed 100%, the perimeter fence is 60% done, and the passenger terminal building is at 50% completion, with an expected finish date of April 1 this year.

Regarding compensation, Engineer Mwambungu reported that TZS 764 million has been paid to residents who lived near the airport to facilitate its expansion. Additionally, the project has created 160 jobs, with 130 positions filled by local workers. He also confirmed that the contractor has received all payments but remains under contract, and the total cost of the airport expansion is TZS 49 billion.
