Tanzania and Algeria have agreed to enhance economic diplomacy by leveraging key economic opportunities available in both countries to foster the well-being of their people.

This development came as Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and African Cooperation, Hon. Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo (MP), held discussions with Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Hon. Ahmed Attaf, on the sidelines of the 46th Session of the African Union Executive Council, held on February 12–13, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The two leaders discussed preparations for the upcoming session of the Joint Permanent Commission for Cooperation (JPC) between Tanzania and Algeria. The last session was held in 2023 in Algiers, Algeria, and the next one is set to take place in Tanzania in 2025. They agreed to convene an additional meeting soon to ensure adherence to the agreement that mandates JPC sessions every two years for effective monitoring and implementation of cooperation areas.

Additionally, the ministers emphasized strengthening cooperation in the education sector. Minister Attaf assured that Algeria would continue providing scholarship opportunities for both long-term and short-term training programs to enhance capacity-building and expertise in various professional and technical fields.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of fostering collaboration in trade, energy, defense, and security. Furthermore, the two sides explored investment in fertilizer production to meet the needs of Tanzanian farmers and support the Building a Better Tomorrow (BBT) initiative, which aims to create youth employment and promote agribusiness.

Cooperation in regional and international platforms was also a key focus of their discussion, ensuring that Tanzania and Algeria stand firm in supporting strategic issues and mutual interests at both regional and global levels.
