The Executive Secretary of the Zanzibar Youth Council, Ali Haji Hassan, has urged Shehas to collaborate in strengthening youth councils within their respective Shehias.

Speaking to Shehas from Mjini District and West B District, he emphasized that Shehas have a responsibility to ensure that young people join the Zanzibar Youth Council, supporting the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar in achieving its goal of establishing and empowering youth councils.

He stated that Shehas are not just community leaders but also guardians of young people and should use their wisdom to encourage youth participation in the council. This would enable them to access opportunities provided by the government and private institutions through the Zanzibar Youth Council.

"Joining the Zanzibar Youth Council benefits young people by providing training that equips them with skills for self-employment and job opportunities," said the Secretary.

Additionally, he urged Shehas to work with the Zanzibar Youth Council in finding effective solutions to challenges affecting young people, such as drug abuse and gender-based violence.

On his part, Farid Mohammed Haji, a member of the Zanzibar Youth Council’s Executive Board, called on Shehas to encourage eligible youth to register in the permanent voter register to actively participate in the upcoming general elections.

Speaking at the meeting, Sheha of Mchina Shehia, Zam Zam Ali Rijali, requested the government to introduce income-generating projects for youth within their Shehias to help improve their livelihoods.

Similarly, Sheha of Muembe Ladu Shehia, Khamis Omar, urged the Zanzibar Youth Council to engage more at the grassroots level, stating that this would help strengthen youth councils within Shehias.

Following the discussions, the Zanzibar Youth Council resolved to hold meetings with Shehas every three months to provide updates and reinforce youth councils.

Furthermore, the council will conduct regular outreach programs to encourage youth participation, including visits to universities, colleges, secondary schools, youth centers, and community areas to engage with young people directly.
